In the high altitude of Boulder (5,430 feet above sea level!), elite runners, along with more than 50,000 other runners, joggers, walkers, and wheelchair athletes, will take part in Colorado’s challenging running highlight, held every year on Memorial Day. Uta will participate again in the fun run, which is open to all, and is looking forward with fellow Boulderites to tackling the hilly course winding through her fitness-conscious hometown.

35th Mile Marathon

Starting: 8:45 am

Location: Columbine Elementary School, 3130 Repplier Drive, Boulder, Colorado 80304

The Columbine Elementary School offers its students a number of activities that aim to support its academic program, build character, and nurture creativity. An important part of these efforts is the annual Mile Marathon—a fun and sporty end-of-the-school-year celebration for several hundred attending kids.

The event is held as preparations get under way for the famous BolderBOULDER 10K race and every year connects the students with elite athletes—some of whom are in town for the race. The support of these professional runners inspires the students to be even more enthusiastic about the joys of physical activity, fitness, and health. The Mile Marathon has a long-time connection with the BolderBOULDER: the kids’ event was started in 1978—a year earlier than the BolderBOULDER—by Rich Castro, the former pro-athlete coordinator of the popular 10K.

The kids will parade out, starting at 8:45 am, followed by the introduction of the guest runners. Uta is happy to join the kids once again for this excitement-filled run. Come and help us cheer them on during their big race day! Just like the participants of the BolderBOULDER, they will receive a bib and a finisher medal—which must make them feel like real athletes after all the effort they put in during their training sessions in gym class.
