40th BMW Berlin Marathon: Uta Will Attend the Anniversary Celebrations for this Beloved Event

Time:
  • 8:20 am Wheelchair Competitors
  • 8:28 am Hand Cyclists
  • 8:45 am Runners and Power Walker
Location:

The marathon will start and end on the boulevard Straße des 17. Juni (between the Brandenburger Gate and „Kleiner Stern“)—10785 Berlin. Participants can enjoy views of famous landmarks such as the Victory Column, the Reichstag, the Kaiser-Wilhelm Memorial Church, and the Potsdamer Platz along their way to the finish line.

The first Berlin Marathon took place on October 13, 1974, with just 286 runners. This year an estimated 40.000 marathoners will come together to celebrate the 40th edition of the event, held traditionally on the last Sunday in September. As a guest of honor of the event, Uta will join the hundreds of thousands of spectators who line the fast course to cheer the runners on their way. For Uta, the fantastic race in Germany’s capital is close to her heart. “The Berlin fans are simply great,” she says. “The way people appreciate and love the marathon means a lot to me. And the atmosphere is unforgettable as thousands of runners from all over the world make their way through our lovely city on a race course that is so rich in history.”

It was 23 years ago that Uta won the prestigious Berlin Marathon in one of its most memorable editions: held three days before the historic reunification of East and West Germany. Only a few months earlier she had left her home in East Germany to live in freedom in the West, and her participation in the “Reunification Marathon”—routed from West Berlin through the Brandenburg Gate into East Berlin—was emotional and meaningful for the three-time Berlin champion. She has such fond memories from this famous race and looks forward to sharing them again this year with participants and her friends.

Uta also will be at the following events leading up to the Berlin Marathon:

  • The BERLIN VITAL Expo, from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Thursday, September 26, at Airport Tempelhof, Platz der Luftbrücke 5, 12101 Berlin. This event includes a kid´s press conference at 2:45 pm at which the youngsters will have the chance to question the Marathon stars. It will be followed by an autograph session at 4:30 pm, as well as a visit to the World Marathon Majors wall.
  • The Bambini Run is for kids age 10 and under and will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 28, in front of the entrance hall at Airport Tempelhof, Platz der Luftbrücke 5, 12101 Berlin.
  • The Breakfast Run, a fun 6K that starts at 9:30 am on Saturday, September 28, in front of Berlin’s beautiful Charlottenburg castle (Spandauer Damm 10-22, 14059 Berlin) and takes the participants to the finish line at the Olympic Stadium—Olympischer Platz 3, 14053 Berlin.
  • The 4.2195K mini Marathon held for kids aged 10 and older at 3:20 pm on Saturday, September 28—Potsdamer Straße, near Sigismundstraße, 10785 Berlin. If you are in town for the race, please come and help us cheer on the students!
  • A showing of a special short movie—“Run Once, Run Forever”—that celebrates the 40th Berlin Marathon. It can be seen on Saturday, September 28, at 6:00 pm at the Cinestar am Potsdamer Platz movie theater, 10785 Berlin.
  • The Farewell Dinner (Erdingerhütte/KOSMOS) and Marathon Party (KOSMOS, Karl-Marx-Allee 131a, 10243 Berlin) to be held on Sunday, September 29, from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm.

Eight world marathon records have been set in Berlin—and to celebrate the 40th anniversary, all those special champions will come together at this year’s event. The Marathon will honor Christa Vahlensieck (Wuppertal, 1977), Ronaldo Da Costa (Brazil, 1998), Tegla Loroupe (Kenya, 1999), Naoko Takahashi (Japan, 2001, first woman to run under 2:20), Paul Tergat (Kenya, 2003), Haile Gebrselassie (Ethiopia, 2007, 2008) and Patrick Makau (Kenya, 2011).
