Two World Indoor Records Broken in Moscow

Two world records were broken at the Russian Indoor Athletics Championships last weekend. The first one was set by Liliya Shobukhova. The 28-year-old Russian improved the 3000-meters time of 8:29.15 minutes by Ethiopian Berhane Adere from 2002 by almost two seconds. She ran 8:27.86 in Moscow. Her previous bests at the 3,000m were 8:34.85 outdoors and 8:46.92 indoors. In this world record race her compatriot Olesya Syreva also finished inside the old mark. She was second in 8:29.00.

On the following day of the National Championships a second world indoor record was broken by Yelena Soboleva at the 1,500m. She clocked 3:58.28 minutes in Moscow. At last year’s World Championships in Helsinki Soboleva had finished fourth in the 1,500 m. The 23-year-old now improved the former world record of Regina Jacobs (USA). She had clocked 3:59.98 in 2003.
