Every year, the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge raises more than $20 million for cancer research and treatment through the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund. First held in 1980, the two-day event was the first fundraising bike-a-thon in the U.S., and now raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event in the country.
This year, from August 4-6, 4,000 riders will come from 30 states and six countries to ride one of several routes. Some are casual peddlers, some hardcore cyclists, but they’re all united by the goal of raising money to fight cancer. Many riders do the Pan-Mass Challenge in honor of a friend or family member who is fighting cancer.
“I’m looking forward to being part of this year’s Challenge,” says Uta. “I’ve always admired the event’s approach to fundraising. Did you know that 99 cents of every dollar raised by riders last year went directly to the Jimmy Fund?”
“I also love how excited people get about the Challenge” says Uta. “Despite riding as much as 192 miles in two days, the riders are so positive and have such a great attitude. I will be part of the riders’ dinner on August 4. I’m also planning to join the riders for some miles on the bike on August 5, the first day of riding.”
